The Demon Trapper's Daughter by Jana Oliver

I don't normally read a lot of young adult books, but The Demon Trapper's Daughter caught my eye. The cover was eye catching enough to make me stop and read the blurb, and the blurb had me interested in reading it.
It’s the year 2018, and with human society seriously disrupted by the economic upheavals of the previous decade, Lucifer has increased the number of demons in all major cities. Atlanta is no exception. Fortunately, humans are protected by Demon Trappers, who work to keep homes and streets safe from the things that go bump in the night. Seventeen-year-old Riley, only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing attraction to fellow Trapper apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving citizens from Grade One Hellspawn. Business as usual, really, for a demon-trapping teen. When a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood, she realizes that she’s caught in the middle of a battle between Heaven and Hell.
After reading The Demon Trapper's Daughter I would have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Jana does a wonderful job a creating an outstanding world with characters you can care about. Riley Blackthorne, wants to follow in her father's footsteps to be a demon trapper, and is training under him until he is killed by a level five demon. After the death of her father Riley has her hands full but somehow manages to get it done. I enjoyed Riley, for the most part. There were times when she got on my nerves, but I think that was just because it was young adult, and the way she sounded at times.

The Demon Trapper's Daughter is set in Atlanta 2018, and is somewhat different then the world we live in now. The economy is shot and Lucifer has more demon's then ever on Earth. The trappers have their hands full dealing with all the demons. I found it interesting that the demons were ranked on different levels (one to five), based on their abilities.

Overall I enjoyed The Demon Trapper's Daughter, it was interesting and a fun read. Jana was able to tie in the information we needed about the demons without taking away from the story or giving us to much information at once. The Demon Trapper's Daughter is a fast paced, urban fantasy novel that everyone will enjoy. Don't let the fact it is considered young adult stop you.
