First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

First Grave on the Right is a great starts to a wonderful new series. Darynda Jones brings us an amazing story, that keeps you turning the pages.

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life…and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

Charley Davidson is a private investigator, and Grim Reaper. I haven't read many novels with a Grim Reaper as the main character and I loved it. I also loved Charley because she was so feisty, and made you laugh out loud.

I enjoyed the mystery behind the murders, and watching Charley solve the crimes with a little help from the ghosts. First Grave on the Right isn't just about Charley solving murders, or helping people cross over, it is also about Charley finding out about herself and the secret behind her hot dreams.

First Grave on the Right is a wonderful paranormal mystery with some romance added to it. Charley uses sarcasm to keep people at arms left. She doesn't leave people in easily, at least not until she opens up to her best friend and assistant Cookie. I really enjoyed the idea of Charley being the Grim Reaper, and encountering ghost on a regular basis.

First Grave on the Right is a great debut novel and the series holds a lot of promise. The characters in First Grave on the Right will be ones you remember. They are all well rounded. I especially enjoyed the love/hate relationship Charley had with skip tracer Garrett. Both paranormal and mystery fans are going to enjoy First Grave on the Right.
